How long does it take to build an ADU?

At Winter Remodeling Inc., we streamline the process of designing, permitting, and building your new accessory dwelling unit (ADU). Depending on design complexity, location, and site conditions, the entire process typically takes between 6-15 months. Design generally takes 3-4 months, permitting 3-6 months, and construction 3-7 months, though timelines may vary based on jurisdiction and unit size. How does pricing work?

At Winter Remodeling Inc., we eliminate the guesswork from ADU costs with clear pricing and a Locked Price Guarantee, ensuring transparency and honest pricing from start to finish. Unlike traditional estimates that fluctuate, our Locked Price secures your final construction cost once the estimate is approved, protecting you from unexpected expenses.
Our unique Price Lock also incentivizes us to work efficiently, as it’s in both our best interests to keep your project on track. By guaranteeing fixed pricing and timely execution, we ensure a smooth, stress-free experience with no hidden costs and daily communication, just a straightforward path to completing your ADU with confidence.
1. Free Discovery Process
We start by listening to your ADU vision and assessing its feasibility, at no cost to you. Our free virtual site assessment, includes a zoning analysis, and budget estimate that includes clarity on potential challenges, costs, and opportunities. You’ll gain valuable insights into overlay zones, regulatory hurdles, and project viability, ensuring you have the information needed to move forward with confidence.

2. Financing
Already have your financing for the project lined up? Awesome. If not, not big deal we offer financing up to 250K of the project through our partners. We also offer a 0% APR credit card for construction purchases up to 20K.

3. Proposal
We provide a detailed proposal outlining all-inclusive ADU costs, ensuring transparency and accuracy. By reviewing various property specific factors, we scope and budget your project with precision. Our proposal includes insights typically found in other proposals as additional costs.
These include free 3D kitchen design & concierge planning services, that other companies charge $2,500+ for, we do this at no additional cost. Signing the proposal authorizes us to begin the design process. We credit back 50% of the engineered/design cost if we complete your construction. If you choose a pre-approved Los Angeles city plan, we apply a $1,500 credit toward construction costs, making your ADU journey even more cost-effective

What is an ADU Feasibility Study?

4. Construction Documents & Price Lock

After signing to do the design an obtaining an approved city design, our drafting team will create a plan and take off for your project. We also handle any required documents for any soils reports (if applicable) and construction loan application, if the loan is with us. We research and develop a final all- inclusive price to build, once finalized, we present a Construction Estimate Agreement (CEA), locking in your price for up to three
months.
The time for final estimate timeline: 3-4 weeks

5. Permitting & Revisions

Winter Remodeling Inc. handles the entire permitting process, ensuring a seamless experience. We submit plans to the city, obtain required permits, and work closely with the building department to keep your project moving efficiently through plan review and approval. Our designers will also provide clear guidance on required plan check and permit fees, keeping you informed every step of the way.
Estimated timeline: 3-6 months.

6. Finish Materials

We guide you through interior and exterior design selections early to keep your project on time and on budget. While the city reviews your plans, you’ll finalize your design choices—either selecting from our Look Book, choosing finishes à la carte, or providing your own materials. 7. Your Build Out
Once permits are approved, construction typically begins within 3-6 weeks. We manage the entire process through the final punch list to ensure your ADU meets or exceeds expectations. Timelines depend on city inspections and unit size, with two-story units taking 4-5 weeks longer. Estimated timeline: 3-7 months.
